Halloween is notorious for pumping out cheap looking boarder line prostitute costumes. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays because it allows me to be creative and play dress up. A few years ago I was in a college town at a college Halloween party. I sat outside watching a parade of girls wearing close to nothing and jokingly started shouting out "HOW MUCH?" at a few girls. This resulted in one girl stopping and telling me everyone has been giving her a hard time and to stop. Although I am against the whole, "she dressed like a slut so she was asking for it" idea. Yet at the same time I feel that it does draw unwanted attention to girls who jump on the band wagon of "its Halloween lets dress like a slut and get away with it" just because "everyone else is doing it."
You can imagine I was not shocked that a costume called "Anna-Rexia"
Many stores are pulling this costume from their stores as customers had made complaints about this crossing the line. It trivializes a serious disease. Companies have said that they have also made a plus size version of this costume...as if that makes it okay?
It's not so much the costume itself that bothers me but rather the message it seems to convey.
What do you think? It is a joke that people are taking too seriously?

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier, From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk
I recently went to Montreal to see the first stop of "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier" at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibit will be leaving Montreal October 2nd and heading To Dallas Texas for the next leg of its tour. After that it will make its last stop in San Fransisco before heading over seas to Madrid at the End of 2012.
The exhibit itself to sum it up in one word...AMAZING!
Along with the garments made throughout Gaultiers 35 year long career, some the mannequins on which his works were displayed on were creepily interactive. They had moving and talking faces! There was even an interactive Jean Paul mannequin!
Below are photographs of the exhibit.
Jean Paul Gaultier offers an open vision of society, a world full of craziness, sensitivity, humour and impertinence where everyone can be who they are in a world without discrimination, a unique "couture fusion". He is a truly generous person and carries a very powerful social message laced with light-hearted humour," states Nathalie Bondil, the museum's Director and Chief Curator.
In addition to about one hundred haute couture and ready-to-wear designs, the exhibition will include sketches, advertisements, excerpts from films and concerts as well as video clips. Created between 1976 and 2011, most of the works have never been exhibited, like never-before-published prints by renowned photographers.
The exhibition is staged in five parts, and the visitor can follow the different influences and collaborations that have marked Gaultier's universe, like those with film makers Luc Besson and Pedro Almodóvar, or ties with singers Mylène Farmer, Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Lady Gaga.
The Museum will also publish a book about the designer including exclusive interviews with Catherine Deneuve, Farida Khelfa, Madonna, Martin Margiela, Pierre Cardin and Dita Von Teese… The "it-book" is sure to become a reference work for Gaultier with its 500 pages and just as many photographs!

At the exhibit, visitors were also allowed to take photographs. Forgive me for the poor quality of my pictures! (they were taken from my phone)
