No Doubt "Looking Hot" Music Video Native American Controversy

No Doubt put out a music video "Looking Hot" portraying a "Cowboys and Indians" wild west fantasy.

The video shows Gwen Stefani tied up as a Native girl held hostage by cowboys, doing smoke signals, roaming the desert on horseback,  and dancing in a wigwam with a wolf.

Many were disgusted and offended by the video. The video was soon after pulled off the web. A once long time fan of No doubt wrote "We are not a trend, we are not a fashion statement! We are human beings, we are a nation, we deserve respect."

No Doubt put out a public apology saying

"As a multi-racial band, our foundation is built upon both diversity and consideration for other cultures. Our intention with our new video was never to offend, hurt or trivialize Native American people, their culture or their history.   Although we consulted with Native American friends and Native American studies experts at the University of California, we realize now that we have offended people.  This is of great concern to us and we are removing the video immediately.  The music that inspired us when we started the band, and the community of friends, family, and fans that surrounds us was built upon respect, unity and inclusiveness.  We sincerely apologize to the Native American community and anyone else offended by this video.  Being hurtful to anyone is simply not who we are."

No Doubt is not the first artist to do war paint and feathers, but they are the first to be under such scrutiny for doing so. Others have included...

Lana Del Rey....

K$sha....

Julliette Lewis....

And pretty much any hipster at any outdoor festival!

What do you think? Do you think that donning a headdress and war paint is the eqivient of doing black face? Or that it's just a form of expression?

  1. Keep pandering and apologizing white people! Minorities are socially behaving towards the white race the way your girlfriend treats you after getting too friendly with a female co-worker or class mate. She says she's not mad anymore, but knows she can get you to do things because she will act as though she is secretly mad to f@*k with your head. Cultural Misappropriation, if that is the current politically correct term, is going to be like racisism, which is to say that only whites can perpetrate it, and only minorities can suffer from it. I call BS...stop misappropriating my people's automobiles, medicine, electricity and all other technology! I'm tired of being treated like the boyfriend who cheated but who didn't cheat! There was no disrespect in Gwen's video. None! It's time to stop this shit and stop making white people jump through hoops. Until time travel is achieved, we will just have to live with the ugly facts of history, which, btw, is ugly the world over. Every group has at one time been subjected to wrongs at the hands of another group and the only way to stop is to stop this ridiculous scrutiny of white people and think of us, and you, as people - period.
